The carbide tips are covered by a rubber shoe and the baskets can twist and be removed or replaced. The locking mechanisms work like bicycle quick releases and can be adjusted to tighten for a secure lock.

Thoughts
My first impression of these poles was somewhat poor and focused on the bulky locking mechanisms that allow the pole to telescope apart. The locks seemed a little too big, and when snapped open, flopped around. Once I got them adjusted to the length I wanted, I started my first hike. However, I was soon disappointed to see that the shafts started sliding back down! At first I was irritated, but upon closer inspection, I realized that the locks were adjustable. It didn’t take long to get them twisted down tight enough that sliding was a non-issue. This also solved some of the floppiness of the lock too! Win!
After using the poles for a while, they’ve grown on me. Fixing the locking mechanism was the big revelation, and they perform just as well as any big box brand I’ve ever used. The grips are EVA foam, not cork, but feel fine and don’t overheat my hands. I like the longer grip too so I can choke down on an uphill climb and not have to worry about adjusting the poles. The adjustable wrist straps are also great and worked as I hoped.
The real win on these poles is the price! For less than half of some brands, you can get a nice, carbon fiber trekking pole that performs just as well.

Have you seen the carbon poles at Costco? Everyone I hike with (mostly Sierra Club) buys the Costco poles to hike with. Quite a price difference, and no complaints.
