Ultimate Hammocks Ultimate Straps Review

Ultimate Hammocks Ultimate Straps

While the name is somewhat repetitive, the Ultimate Straps from Ultimate Hammocks does present one of the more unique designs to daisy-chain webbing straps that I’ve seen. The woven design allows the straps to be extremely slim and lightweight while maximizing total suspension length and strength. These straps are not only the lightest and thinnest daisy chain straps, they are among the lightest hammock suspension systems period.

Product Description

The Ultimate Straps have a daisy-chain design with 17 attachment loops, which provide adjustment points roughly every four inches (10 cm). What makes these straps unique among the dozens of daisy-chain style straps on the market is their woven construction and tapered design. The strap begins as a 1 in (2.5 cm)-wide webbing on the anchor side for 4 ft (122 cm) then tapers to 0.5 in (1.3 cm) where the loops are woven together.

Overall Impressions and Updates

When I first handled the straps, I was impressed with how light and slim they were. They pack down the size of most webbing/Whoopie Sling systems. The woven design is really impressive. The only sewn portions are the loops on each end of the strap. The straps are smooth and flat. This type of design can be somewhat difficult to open the loops, especially with gloved fingers. It’s certainly a trade-off with the design, but not a show-stopper.

Some type of clip is required to connect the strap to the hammock, which will aid weight. The climbing carabiner shown above is overkill, but effective. Lighter versions can be purchased from hammock stores such as ENO.

While the straps are extremely light, you still need some way to connect the hammock. The most common way, and one of the easiest, is to use climbing-rated carabiners. This can add a few ounces to the system, nearly doubling the overall weight depending on what clip you choose. You could go with a toggle system by pushing the loop from the hammock through one of the strap’s daisy chain loops and then using a toggle such as a thick stick and put it through the hammock loop. I think, however, that this system works best with a carabiner. The good news is that most recreational-style hammocks typically include a pair of carabiners.

Note: Ultimate Hammocks is planning to release a larger/wider version that is projected to be 4 oz (113 g) with a breaking strength of 1600 lbs (726 kg).

Criteria Rating Notes
Construction and Craftsmanship ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ It’s hard to beat the construction on these straps. I can’t really find any fault in the design and workmanship. Simply amazing.
Modularity ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Daisy chain straps have a lot of utility outside of just hammock camping.
Aesthetics ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ The woven design is stunning. Thin and sleek.
Price and Value ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ At the time of this writing, the MSRP is estimated at $25. This would be a great price for a daisy chain strap and I hope it holds, but I’m rating it a little lower until I know for sure.

Do you mean 4 OZ heavier?

No, the bigger straps will weigh a total of 4 oz, which is just under twice the weight of the lighter straps.

I saw these on kickstarter and wasn’t impressed. Sadly, I still feel the same way. I use bull line or mule tape with a super secret protector for the tree (sticks!!!!) and I come off lighter, at 1/12th the cost and I have more adjustability. Maybe I should just package my system up and sell it. Ha! Still, great review. What system do you use?

Bull Line is great! We use that or mule tape with the scouts. Hard to beat the price when the local power company donated a used roll. I believe that these daisy chain straps in general are one of the best options for new or inexperienced hangers because there is no knot to tie wrong or forget and adjustment is straightforward. For us veterans, well, it’s fun to rig you gear however suits you 🙂

Are they thin enough to use Marlin Spike hitches and toggles?

I suppose you could, but it seems like a waste for these straps. Marlinspike is designed to place a toggle along a long length of rope or webbing, but the Ultimate Straps already have clip points sewn in.
