You could easily get away with a 10 foot long hammock, but maybe a 9.5 foot would be better. The trick is how deep you sag the hammock and what obstacles are in the way. If you don’t have enough room, you’ll have to hang shallow. I’d just get a basic, gathered-end hammock, like the Grand Trunk Double. It’s the best price and you can even splurge for a few more dollars and get something with a pattern.

Klaara, the calculations are pretty simple, but I am working on an updated version soon. I’m not doing anything special like accounting for fabric stretch, material type, etc., it’s just basic trig, which is what you’re using, I’m guessing. I’d be happy to compare results and see where we can find a solution! Send me an email.

Yes, I really like those straps. They’ve done an excellent job on those and their new hammocks. The other straps I really like are the Kammok Python straps. They purchased the Ultimate Straps which are woven, not sewn, and are flat so they pack down smaller and have a taper from wide to narrow. It’s pretty cool.

I have tried all kinds and brands of hammocks and straps, Grand Trunk last so long and are so robust, plus I love that they are available at the major stores like dicks sporting goods. Highly recommended. I got mine online at http://www.grandtrunk.com

not necessarily feedback for the calculator, but I have a question you might be able to help we with. I’m in my last year of high school, and for our math studies, we needed to design and solve an applied math problem and present a report about it. I created a set-up in which you can find the suspension length based on the hammock length (not ridgeline but total), suspension angle and distace between trees. In this sense it is quite familiar to this calculator, which I only now came across.
However, you account for weight and sit height, which seem to affect the results, as your calculator gives different results to mine. I simplified the case to a hammock with no weight in it, as it makes the problem more approachable. Extending it to a more ‘real-world’ case in which someone is sleeping/sitting in the hammock would be amazing, yet I can’t figure out how to approach solving this. Could you give any tips/insight into how you account for it? Or what kind of math the calulator is based on over-all? Perhaps we have radically different approaches. Only if it’s not too much trouble, of course.
Thanks!
– Klaara

For some reason my message didn’t show for me, didn’t mean to post 2. Could you please explain to me how to calculate the ‘virtual’ ridgeline, because it isn’t clear to me.

Could you tell me how to calculate the ‘virtual’ ridgeline? Since i will be hanging my hammock indoor, i won’t be using an actual ridgeline.
I want to calculate all the values for a 35 and 40 degree hang-angle. I know how to calculate the hangpoint and suspension length.
