Review – Go! Outfitters Adventure Top Quilt

Go! Outfitters Adventure Top Quilt

Product Description

The Go! Outfitters Adventure Top Quilt is a synthetic-filled, quilt-style sleeping bag. The design includes an adjustable foot box and collar. A clip on the collar also allows the bag to be gathered into a pseudo-hood.

Overall Impressions and Updates

I was given a Go! Outfitters Adventure Top Quilt to review back at the beginning of the summer. My initial tests proved too hot to handle (the company rates the bag at 20°F/-6°C) with evening temperatures starting in the 50s°F (~10°C) and jumping to the mid-70s°F (~21°C). I held off using the bag very often until the fall when I could get some outdoor trips in the mid 40s°F (~5°C). The bag is quite warm, but I may have to wait and do an addendum in the winter months to really push the bag’s lower comfort limit.

Synthetic bags are usually a little cooler for me than comparable down-filled bags, but the Max Loft insulation seems to hold up to it’s rating fairly well. The downside is that the synthetic insulation is heavier and doesn’t compress down as much as down, although it is reasonably priced.

Footbox Design

Unlike many quilt designs that take a rectangular quilt shape and then using snap or hook-and-loop fasteners close up one end, the Adventure Top Quilt has a permanent foot box that includes a cinch cord to adjust how much the “box” opens and seals around your legs. I like how the footbox is built because I don’t have to worry about putting too much pressure across the seams or popping a snap, thereby losing the footbox.

The footbox

In practice, I didn’t need to adjust the footbox and feel that instead of needing any adjustment, if the bag just had some elastic ribbon permanently installed to allow for some flexibility and stress relief. A 20 in (51 cm) pad can easily slip into the foot box.

Head Clip

Many quilt-style sleeping bags include a clip of some kind to allow the head end to wrap around your neck and be more secure. The Adventure Top Quilt uses a larger plastic buckle than I’ve seen in any other quilt. I was initially worried I would feel it, but in practice I never had an issue. I mostly kept the hood clipped, even when I didn’t use it. The bag is so wide and long that I didn’t need any extra material to just tuck around me.

Design, Fit, and Feel

I’m just under 6 ft (1.8 m) tall, and I nearly drown in the extra material. At 7 ft (2.1 m) long, the Adventure Top Quilt is probably the longest bag I’ve ever tested. The extra length makes it easy to find extra fabric to “snuggle” in and wrap around your shoulders, even laying on my side. For me, the length was a little too long, as I felt I had too much material to deal with, especially when I was tucking the bag over my head. Tall folks will really love the length.

The polyester shell and liner were comfortable and had a good hand, but I wasn’t really thrilled with the grey color scheme (this is a very personal and subjective opinion). The design has a lot of potential for introducing different contrasting colors, and I hope Go! Outfitters consideres other options as I think it would have a nice appeal.

Recommendations and Review

The size and price make this a good deal for campers, especially big and tall folks who are looking for that extra length.
