Yes, children can use hammocks, even youth. If you hang it correctly with a low center of gravity, it’s more difficult to fall out (not impossible, but more difficult). Suffocation is less of an issue since you have air flow even through the fabric. However, strangulation is certainly a concern with some string hammocks. I would only recommend breathable, solid fabric hammocks for kids. When I hung my hammocks with kids, I would stack them so the child was above me so I had easy hand access to help them. Or even side-by-side but hung low in case they fall out it’s not a big deal. Strangulation is more an issue if they play with the hammock, so I would never leave a child unattended with a hammock or encourage play with a hammock.

But I didn’t know if they were a safe way to sleep for my littlest who will probably be 18 months when we first go out. Can a 1 1/2 year old sleep in a hammock safely? Is there anything I should know before setting it up? I’m not so worried about insulation as they would be indoors it was more about him falling or managing to get into a position to make suffocation an issue I assume I’m being silly but looking for reassurance!

I want to take my kids on some multiday cycling trips from next year (they’ll be 3 and 5) and hadn’t considered hammocks instead of tents. It’s something to look into, for sure.
The tip about sleeping bags (stuffing the ends back in the bags) is really excellent too. I was about to get a child bag for me eldest but like your idea way better. Some great ideas, thank you!

I’m not quite sure I’m following you on this. Please clarify.

I read the article and it never said. once that’s resolved, I see this 100% as working.

If you ask some cultures, like the folks down in Mereda, Yucatan, Mexico, their children sleep full time in a hammock. My 5-year-old loves sleeping in a hammock. When hung properly, the hammock provides a low center of gravity, making it difficult to flip out. It also provides a flatter laying position, so there are no neck kinks or twists. As with all things, there are risks. I wouldn’t put a heavy blanket or put infants in a hammock without supervision. Use good judgement and be wise!

Have toddler and wondering how young is too young due to things like neck position and heavy blankets, more so than the risk of falling out.
